DN-Tell us a little bit about you. What would people find cool/interesting about you?

Bullet-I am a Detroit based model and burlesque performer. I was born and raised in Detroit, and have lived most of my life here. I do metal – burlesque, which is my own style of fierce, aggressive, sensual not-so-classical-burlesque… if that makes sense. I have been a burlesque dancer since 2012, after being inspired by the beautiful women of all shapes, sizes, and hues in the International Black Burlesque Company. Later I joined the Honey Bunny Variety Burlesque troupe, and have since branched off into solo work and put a bigger focus on my modeling. I have always been a performer. When I was a child I would write and perform plays for my mother, portraying several different characters as a sole actor. You had to get creative as only child, you know. I joined several summer youth acting groups and after school theatre clubs in my pre-teen to teenage years. I also learned ballet, tap, and modern dance around that time. I feel at home on stage.

DN- How did you come to be involved with Detroit Nude? What inspired you to come to the city, in the dead of night, and shoot nudes?

Bullet-I saw a casting call for Detroit Nude and I thought it was a wonderful project. I like the classic Detroit locations that were involved in all the shoots and how they show the city positively. I also enjoy being nude, so there’s that.

DN- How was your shoot? Was it fun? Was it what you thought it would be? Were you nervous before you shot? Would you do it again?

Bullet-The shoot was incredibly exciting. Even though I am comfortable with my body, I was slightly nervous. Once I got into the swing of the shoot, though, I didn’t think about the fact that I was nude. I would definitely do it again, I think Detroit offers an endless number of beautiful landscapes and architecture to be explored and I would have no problem having my naked self photographed in the midst of it all, again!

DN- How much modeling experience had you had before this shoot?

Bullet- I started doing burlesque in 2012, and a large part of the art form is the “pose.” People are always taking photos at performances so you have to be mindful of how you may appear on camera. I started doing some modeling work outside of burlesque just last year in 2014.

DN- What is your artistic background ?

Bullet-In addition to acting and dancing as a teenager, I also took some theatre classes in college at the University of Toledo. I have always felt that acting does not just involve becoming another person, but it teaches you a great deal about yourself. This prepared me for my time in International Black Burlesque, (now International Black Burlesque Company) and Honey Bunny Variety Burlesque. Burlesque, for me, is all about the act, the character. So, my burlesque character is called Bullet Bitch. She is an amplified version of myself, who I sometimes wish I could be 100% of the time. She is an in-your-face bitch who is maybe a bit deranged, but tantalizing and beautiful in her own way. She does not particularly care for restrictive ideals and moral codes. There’s a reason she is called Detroit’s Countess of Lust.

DN- What line of work are you in?

Bullet-I am on a hiatus from burlesque and am trying to focus more on my modeling for the time being.

DN- Would you recommend shooting for this project to anyone else?

Bullet- Yes, it’s a ton of fun.

DN- What is your opinion of the city and all that’s been going on? “New” arts scene, Movement, etc?

Bullet-This is tough for me… I was born in Detroit, and I have spent the majority of my life here. I love this city with every part of my being. I think the thing that makes Detroit great is the people; Detroiters are some of the most humble, hard working, creative, soulful, strong, and artistic people I have ever met. The part that’s tricky is when people talk about “new Detroit.” While development in the downtown to midtown area of Detroit has done much to attract outsiders to the city, and generate more interest, and money for the big wigs who are investing in the city, families who have spent their whole lives here seem to get swept by the wayside as if they don’t matter. While it’s great that people are taking an interest in the city, you must understand that there have been artists, musicians, family run restaurants, dive bars, specialty shops, farmers markets, and general entrepreneurship making Detroit thrive for decades. And while it is great there are new restaurants popping up in midtown what seems like daily, it is disheartening to see that happen as people in other areas in the city are struggling to survive, having their water shut off, or being forced out of their homes because they don’t fit in with “new Detroit.” Recently, while visiting the Detroit Artists Market, I saw a button that said “Hipsters did not invent Detroit.” This sums up my thoughts.

DN- If you could tell the world one thing, what would it be?

Bullet-Just one thing? I have a lot to say! If it had to be one thing, I would tell people not to get so caught up in the “destination” of things. It is all about the journey. It doesn’t matter where you are going, it does not matter where you think you are headed, it does not matter if you do not even know where you are going or where you will end up. It matters how you get there, wherever “there” may be. If I could tell the world a second thing, it would be to live for yourself and do what is best for you. And what is best for you is something no one knows but you!
